Sofie Goos 2nd in Ironman Copenhagen; Axel Zeebroek wins the International Triathlon of Weiswampach

Sofie Goos came second in today’s Ironman Copenhagen after the European Champion Ironman 70.3, Daniela Ryf. Clocking in at 09:06:08, Sofie followed on 12'35" of Daniela Ryf (SUI; 08:53:33). Mareen Hufe (GER; 09:25:18) ended third. While Sofie came 2nd in Copenhagen, her teammate Axel Zeebroek won the international Triathlon of Weiswampach (Olympic distance) on his home soil.

A good week-end for the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team with 3 races and 3 podium places. Yesterday Ronnie Schildknecht finished 3rd in the Ironman 70.3 of Budapest.

Sofie Goos 2nd in Ironman Copenhagen

Sofie Goos and Daniela Ryf both came to Copenhagen with the ambition to earn their ticket to Kona. Sofie started the sunny day in Copenhagen with a solid swim. She came out of the water in 3rd position, after 54'30", 5'53" behind swim leader Daniela Ryf and 7" behind Tasmyn Hayes. During the bike leg Sofie passed Tasmyn Hayes (NZL) after 30km. Sofie experienced some material problems during the bike leg. Daniela Ryf was able to increase the lead to 18'10" at T2. During the run, Sofie realised that the gap with Daniela was unbridgeable. Although it was raining cats and dogs, she controlled her marathon. A well-paced race led to her deserved 2nd place.

Relieved

"After my altitude training I was curious to know how I would react on it in race conditions. I felt relieved with the result. The aim was to get a Kona ticket and that came true. During the swim leg I was in a strong group, which resulted in a good first leg. I felt good on the bike and I increased my lead on Mareen Hufe up to 7' half way the bike leg. At 110km, I experienced some mechanical problems. Nevertheless, I kept the same lead on the 3rd athlete Mareen Huse at T2. I knew that if I would approach my marathon smart with a good nutrition plan. I would be able to keep the second place and get the ticket to Kona. Daniela Ryf deserved to win today and I am very happy I succeeded to qualify for Kona."

Axel Zeebroek wins the international Triathlon of Weiswampach (Olympic distance)

Axel Zeebroek also competed today on home soil. He finished first in the International Triathlon of Weiswampach with a 1:57 finish, Tom Mets (BEL) and Michaël Rosu (BEL) completed the podium.

In dry conditions, Axel Zeebroek raced with the same strategy of last year. Axel started of fast during the swim leg, he came first out of the water with a lead of 10" on the second and almost a minute on a group of chasers. During the bike leg the aim was to increase the lead as much as possible, after the bike leg he led with 3'30" on a group of 9 triathletes, this was enough to control the run leg and win.

Happy and tired

"I am happy that my plan worked out as I wanted to. During the race I had no clue about my lead until the end of the bike leg. I felt comfortable to hear that I had a decent lead on my chasers at T2. I am happy to win here again. I feel a bit tired, this was definitively a good training for Kona.

In September, I will also race in Gerardmer and in the Ironman 70.3 of Lanzarote to get well prepared at the start in Hawaï."
